In my world there are no bad kids, just impressionable young people wrestling with emotions & impulses, trying to communicate their feelings and needs the only way they know how.

Child Assessments

Services

A Psycho-educational assessment is generally completed for children and teens aged 6 to 18.

It is usually completed if you, or a professional, suspect that your child has a learning disability (reading, writing or math), an intellectual disability, or ADHD. It also considers mood impacts and screens for anxiety or depression or other social, emotional, physical or behavioural needs.

The goal is to provide insight into your child’s cognitive and academic profile and to get results in a comprehensive report.

Process and Time

Having a comprehensive assessment requires a large time commitment, but this is to provide a much better picture of your child. Below is a sample of what will occur over your 2-3 day appointments. Appointments for testing are booked in three-hour increments, with a final 1 hour debrief at the end.

Day 1

  • Complete Consent Forms and Interview with Parents/Guardians- About 1 hour
  • Cognitive Assessment or "Brain Games"- About 2 hours

Day 2

  • Academic Functioning- if required to look into learning disabilities - About 2-3 hours.
  • Other assessments as required (memory, fine motor, attention, etc.)- Time varies.
  • Questionnaires and forms completed by Parent or Guardian/Teacher/Child - Time varies

Debrief Day

  • Final Feedback Debrief to discuss results - About 1 hour

Important Considerations

  • Please be aware that input from others is often required (i.e. teachers completing forms)

  • There is no child care provided for children during interview times. Please be able to dedicate full attention to this part of the process. Be aware that if there are topics you do not want your child to hear during the interview, they may have to wait unsupervised outside the room.

  • The debrief and final report may take up to a month after last day of testing at the most. If there is an urgent rush please let me know at intake or when inquiring about an assessment. No guarantees for deadlines are made however.

  •  It is the parent/guardian responsibility to ensure the document reaches professional personnel (doctors, school).
