Marianne Cantwell
If you have physical symptoms, you would see a doctor and undergo in-depth medical tests.
Similarly, if you have symptoms affecting school achievement, memory concerns, or sudden emotional changes, you would go for a psychological assessment.
I don't set out to give a diagnosis, or just label you, but I find out what could be underlying concerns and how to support those areas of weakness and foster strengths.
I work from a strengths and weakness model as people function with both areas, I also consider the holistic viewpoint, I look at the entire person and their role and relationships.
I start all assessments with an in-depth interview and provide no judgment. I then collect all information that could be relevant to a client's functioning. This is a client's chance to talk about childhood, medical history, physical and mental health functioning, current symptoms and strengths and hobbies.
Then together we complete what I like to call "Brain Games". Just like in swimming lessons where something's may be easy but something's you may not learned how to do yet, I find your "brain level".
You can never fail these tests, unless you don't try. But each person will have different levels of ability for memory, speaking, thinking, and problem solving. Knowing what you are weak at, but also strong in will be helpful to daily functioning and success.
I also send forms to family members, or teachers if applicable, to evaluate functioning and give outside perspective. This helps me create a whole picture.
The results are then presented in a report that you can take to your doctor, therapist, or to your school for accommodations.
Having a diagnosis may open doors to funding, specialized supports, or even a better awareness of oneself.
The report includes interventions and next steps to take to support functioning. I will never give you a label and just send you away. My goal is to guide you on your path to a successful you.
Is your child struggling in school? Has their teacher brought up concerns? Is your child having difficulties in areas of social, emotional or behavioural development?
An assessment will explore all areas of strengths and weaknesses to learn more about a child and to help guide interventions and strategies for their success.
Do you feel that you are not reaching your potential? Have you been struggling in daily living and are not sure why? Do you require a psychological report to apply for services?
An adult assessment will look at each individual holistically and provide information about their cognitive functioning to best guide supports. Mental health is also key and will be evaluated to ensure the whole person is supported intellectually and spiritually.
